The Taj Mahal

Taj MahalIt’s the shining star attraction of India. The biggest tourist attraction, the biggest hype, the most photographed.  But it’s the attraction with the most rules.

(No food, no wires, no sharp objects, no tripods, no flashlights, no shoes without foot covers, no photography in the mausoleum, an airport-like security search before entering, armed guards.  It’s closed on Fridays.)

We roused ourselves in darkness to be at the gates at dawn.  The light is better then, with the sun rising, the air is cooler, and while many tourists have the same idea,  the crowds are not as crazy.Taj Mahal

  Truly a spectacular place.

Maharajah

Maharajah means “Great King” in Sanskrit. Palaces of former Maharajahs have become ‘Heritage Hotels’ in some cases. This one is the Taj Rambagh Palace in Jaipur and I think it has much more personality than the local Marriott. The gardens are spectacular. There’s a palm reader on site. And I don’t think you’ll find fancier guards anywhere else.
