Pacific International Quilt Festival – Off the Grid

I love repetition, but whether it’s called improv, crazy, chaos, or fooling around, these quilts new and old that go off the grid with abandon, are great.

Pacific International Quilt Festival 2013 – Repetition

There’s something about repeating forms that is soothing. Rows of trees, lines in vineyards, stacks of plates, a well organized fabric stash….Repetition is a key element in quilting, and my favorite. You might even say that my favorite quilts are obsessively and compulsively repetitive. To me, the sum parts makes a much greater whole.
I love the way that the artist quilters here used repetition today’s shots from this year’s Pacific International Quilt Festival.

The quilts here speak for themselves, but something to note – The squares on this quilt – Mere Color – are less than 1/2″ each.

Pacific International Quilt Festival 2013 – Stitchy

Today’s curated quilt show theme is ‘Stitchy’.  Why? Because when I look at these quilts that’s what I think.  (I also call music with a lot of notes are ‘Notey’ – Does anyone else?).  There’s no category for ‘stitchyness’ in quilt competitions or festivals normally.  But I’m calling it a category here because I think there’s almost as much thread (maybe more) stitched on these quilts as there is fabric underneath.

The craftsmanship in every one of these was extraordinary. I let the ladies with the white gloves handle the quilts, and didn’t touch the quilts but I know for a fact some folks couldn’t resist. I know if one of these quilts were mine, I’d be running my hands all over them as well.

This particular one ‘Holding it Together’ truly had more thread I think than fabric. The artist statement read “Anger and frustration made this piece. 9000 yards of thread ripped from spools and thrown at the fabric. Layered with more threads and hanging with buttons.”

The above quilt’s artist statement said that it came from a personal challenge of “keep it simple”. ‘Really?’ comes to my mind. It’s quilted in concentric circles and below is the reverse side of the quilt.
