Beads of Courage

Beads of CourageGlass beads have been made and given for over 100,000 years. They’re pieces of art that that unlike things made of fiber and wood and biodegradable things, withstand being buried, washed away, burned, frozen, buried in closets, and any other number of disasters that can befall craft projects.

Beads of Courage is an organization that gives beads to children undergoing tough illnesses to help celebrate and document their journey. Each kind of bead symbolizes a different thing whether a needle stick, chemotherapy, spinal tap, or any number of other medical procedures and milestones. It’s heartrending to hear the stories of the children as they proudly show their strands of beads and talk about how they earned each one.   (Here’s a link to a moving video piece that CBS’s Sunday Morning did last year)  Sometimes having a tangible thing is a really good thing.

Beady

Lampworked beadsWe’ve been making beads again.   Sometimes there just isn’t enough danger in quilting with needles thread and cutting wheels and scissors.

Fire,  propane, kilns, molten glass, popping hot glass rods, red hot metal….Now there’s some fun!

Vicky wanted to learn how to lampwork to add to her jewelry making skill set, and since she’s been safe behind the wheel of a car, and hasn’t burned down the house cooking or soldering,  we thought let’s give her a chance behind a torch lampworking.  It’s like teaching someone to drive, only with a flaming hot torch.

The world's most expensive ice cream sundae
Three Twins Ice Cream is one of the vendors at Oxbow Public Market in Napa. Marketed as “Inconceivably Delicious Organic Ice Cream” it’s as nice and creamy as one would expect for a high end ice cream made with all natural ingredients.

Three Twins at Oxbow

But what sets it above all the other high end ice cream makers for me are their signs -their high end items rather innocuously placed along with the pricing for special sundaes, scoop sizes and all the usual frozen confectionary information.
