11/11/11

Before I get onto my corduroy update, I want to acknowledge that more than I appreciate corduroy, I appreciate our Veterans.  We’ll be having fun, what with school out, cheering at 11:11 am, the corduroy quilt finished, and consuming vertically aligned foods that resemble 11/11/11. I’m grateful to be free to do all this and more.

On to the show….Detail
I used two kinds of corduroy – pin wale and a wider wale (8 wale I think) – and improv pieced my second ever Totoro quilt. The color of the cord just resembled Totoro too much to pass up the chance to try playing with piecing this charismatic creature again. (check here to see the first Totoro quilt) Totoro is pieced entirely out of cord with the wider wale used for his arms, and pin wale for his head and body.  I used quilting cottons – prints and solids – for the background and for his eyes and teeth.  And just to obliterate any concerns about the coziness of the quilt and Totoro, I backed the quilt with Minkee which is a lush, plush fabric.   Schnap, the co-quilter, is partial to Minkee.Schnap on Minkee

But she doesn’t seem to mind the corduroy front side either.

What a friendly, protective creature, especially in corduroy! I love your mix of colors and neutrals, and your curly quilting really brings out the corduroy texture in a fun way. I’m so glad that you could join us. Save the wales!
