Charley Harper

There’s a rather large coffee-table book that has been out a few years, Charley Harper, An Illustrated Life, edited by the designer Todd Oldham.
Mr. Harper was a printmaker, artist, graphic designer who has become much more appreciated and famous lately.  There are puzzles large and small, books, prints, calendars, mugs and more.  I recently passed down a jigsaw puzzle with a Charley Harper graphic to a good friend who extravagantly returned the favor by presenting me with this:

This is the one and only cookbook Charley Harper illustrated.   Commissioned by General Mills, it was his first commission in book illustration.

Mr. Harper was rushed on this project.  When asked for his recollection on it, he mostly recalls getting Strep Throat doing this project.  Further and later in his career he chafed at portraying the “happy housewife” in a project requested by Proctor and Gamble.

Knowing that puts the humor and the energy in the illustrations in context.  I love the little jokes that he’s woven into each illustration.  Every page has one.  These combined with the era of food photos before food styling, recipes that include as many Betty Crocker/Gold Medal/SoftasSilk Flour/Bisquick/Brown n’Serve mentions as possible, and Harper’s feverish illustrations make for a brilliant and humorous time capsule to the past.

Free Compliments

I had to pass this on. It’s lovely.  And I like it much better than free hugs.  Hugs are nice and all,  but I’m just not into accepting or giving hugs from and to random people.  My personal bubble space is, well, uncomfortable with that.   Free compliments though are always sweet especially if you can tear off and keep the one you want most.

Go to Kind over Matter to download the PDF and print out your own poster.  And by the way, there’s an empty PDF to fill with your own compliments if you wish.

One man’s junk is another’s treasure

The Alameda Point Flea Market is a fun place to spend a Sunday morning.  Today’s was glorious. So beautiful, that the car’s auto air conditioning went on as we left, which then left me anxious that global warming and the melt down of all of the polar ice caps is looming much closer than previously imagined.  But I digress…

Reduce, ReUse, Recycle….that’s all good, right?  So the Flea market is full of things 20 years and older (at least) and happens every first Sunday of the month.  Treasures or junk abounds.   The hard core get there at 6am when the place opens.  But getting there at a more reasonable hour is okay too if you’re okay with less good stuff, and traffic, but maybe more sleep.  Wear good comfortable walking shoes, put on sunscreen, and bring water.  Expect to get your hands grubby if you like to pick things up. Bring your camera because even if you don’t buy stuff, you can always take pictures of it.  And most important, bring cash!  It’s 800 or so garage/estate sales all on one decommissioned airplane runway.
