Endeavour

Endeavour Flyover Bay Area
NASA retired the space shuttle fleet but the shuttle named Endeavour went on a retirement tour before being grounded for good. It was supposed to fly over the Bay Area yesterday, but the flight was postponed due to fog, and it happened today instead.Endeavour Audience It worked out perfectly for me. I’d thought I had missed it yesterday while busy with other stuff. But then I read in the paper that the flyby was going to occur around 10:30am today in my area.

We went to the Palo Alto Wildlife Refuge with a bunch of other like minded folks to say farewell.

The Crucible

Lampworking at the Crucible
The Bead Challenge happened at The Crucible. They have a nice torch set up there with lots of ventilation.  They also have other super duper cool stuff.  The Crucible Lampworking roomActually,  I should say ‘hot’ stuff.  There are lots of melty smelty soldery things going on here.  If you happen to be into burning, torching, welding, cutting, sawing, melting, hammering, soldering, molding, or grinding, this is the place for you. The Crucible BlacksmithyWe were there during a relatively quiet period. The next sessions of classes are about to start up soon. I’m told that ordinarily the place can be deafening with all the activity.Blacksmithing ToolsThere’s even a room for just grinding things. The Crucible Grinding RoomThe Crucible Grinding Room

Bead Challenged

Beads of Courage Bead
This weekend was time for the Beads of Courage Bead Challenge. A bunch of beady eyed folks, myself included, got together to lampwork beads for kids with serious illnesses.  Read more about Beads of Courage last year here. You can watch a video about the Beads of Courage organization here.

I made things with eyeballs. I am told that beads with eyes are in high demand.

I left having made a parliament of owls, a mob of frogs, a rave of snakes, a colony of salamanders, and a fish or two. They all had eyeballs.
