The Jean Paul Gaultier exhibit at the De Young Museum only runs for another couple of days. If you’re around the Bay Area and haven’t seen it, go.
I’m sorry I didn’t go sooner.
The creativity, craftsmanship, and the collections were all amazing. There’s nothing I seriously wish was in my personal closet, but boy, did I want to reach out and touch the fabric, fondle the lace, pet the furs and velvets, feel the beading and quilting, and run my hand over the beadwork.
The curation of the exhibit was as creative as the clothing. You’re greeted by Jean Paul Gaultier (shown in the first picture) talking about his inspirations and inviting you to listen to the music.
He’s surrounded by creatures like him – mannequins with noses and blank faces onto which a video of a moving talking face is projected.
Some of them sing. Some just blink, stare and act like fabulous models. In some cases the mannequins talk directly to the viewers.
I’m pretty sure this one told me I looked fabulous.
I wasn’t in London for the Olympics but we saw a lot of the preparatory work being done.
