Beach Plastic

Re-using things, saving scraps, cataloging, collecting, and collating. Things I like to do.  How about you?

The Langs are using beach plastic from the beach in Point Reyes to create interesting things. Point Reyes is north of San Francisco Bay on the California coastline, and is relatively isolated. It’s amazing – and a bit troubling – the things found there.

I love how they sleuth out where their treasures originate.  And besides their art, their relationship seems just lovely.

They’re not alone in making and displaying art made from plastic washed up on beaches. I posted about another exhibit on plastic in August, Washed Ashore.

Swooning with Linen

Red Linen Swoon BlockI bought 100% unbleached linen.  I like the way it looks – sort of a solid but not really… with the natural fiber creating subtle bits of texture and color.  And I love the way washed linen feels.

I washed it, pressed it, and decided to make another Swoon block.  One block begat another, and away we went!Citrus Linen Swoon

I guess I didn’t get enough of making half square triangles and flying geese with the first Swoon quilt.  (Check out lots of great pictures of this block being made on Flickr!)

I’ll write more about sewing with linen and post more pictures of the linen blocks when it’s a bit less damp outside.   I want to shoot pictures of the blocks without them getting soggy.

Agog about Goldfish

Have you seen this? This takes trompe l’oeil to a whole new level.

Inspiration comes from all sorts of places.  It says that the artist – Riusuke Fukahori – was struggling with artistic vision and became inspired by his pet goldfish.

I wonder how many people tried to stick their fingers into the containers?

Anyway, I wanted to see more, and found this Flickr site with closeup photos and more wonderful short videos.  Check it out if you were as agog by the video as I was.
