Compost

I’m excited to report that I have created (finally!) a compost pile that is generating heat!
I’ve been composting for ages. Things like peels, apple cores, banana peels, wilted lettuce and other veggie scraps have gone into a compost bin but what I’ve generated in the past has been a big pile of worms. I’m not complaining about those – the worms and veggie compost that have resulted have been very good for the garden.

Now by luck, some beneficial bacteria, plus a new larger bin, and more attention to the right ratio of green and brown, things are breaking down faster than ever. It’s disconcerting to open up the bin to steaming stuff, made even more evident in the cold weather we’ve had. The new compost is going to be great for the new veggie beds.

Though I think it’s now too hot for the worms.

A Co-Post

Not much in creative or food related things got done today by Alpha. I was fed dry food and water. There were no new quilts to organize. Alpha was off at classes, lunch, shopping, and carting around other humans.

I would like some of what they’re having. Lucky dogs.

Garden Show

This doesn’t look like much of a garden. More like something from a Stanley Kubrick movie. It’s a garden designed and set up by Environmental Design students from UC Berkeley.  Who the heck would really ever have a garden like this one?

And how about this one? This is an aviary for pigeons covered in succulents, roofed with sod.

It was the exhibits that were the most unusual and took the most risks that got the most attention.

The ones that had nice azaleas, potted plants,  orchids, waterfalls, and teak furniture, were nice. Super nice really.  (If anyone wants to build me a garden installation like those, come on over.)

But the extraordinary ones were took risks,  and exaggerated displays in just the right amounts.piecedgoods SF Garden Show San Mateo County Fairgrounds
