Pacific International Quilt Festival 2014 – The Natural World

Here’s part 2 of this year’s PIQF pictures. Being a collector and sorter (what quilter isn’t?), I categorized pictures in my own categories – quilts shown together on this blog weren’t necessarily hung anywhere close to each other or categorized by the quilt show together. Go here to see PIQF 2014 part 1.
Stay tuned for more later!

Pacific International Quilt Festival 2014 – Fabric Art

PIQF rolled into town this weekend.  As with previous PIQF picture postings, I’m going to post pictures in batches (today being part 1), lest I overwhelm my computer, my mind, your mind, the internet connection, or all of the above. The judgement of how I curated the batches and which quilts are posted is completely of my own creation.

Marilyn Belford – Perseus Saving Andromeda 79″x66″

There were many memorable pieces. However, first I fretted about my eyesight going bad. Presbyopia? Glaucoma? Retinal Detachment? Brain Fog? Nope. I noticed upon looking up (as did others around me), and was disappointed to note that a significant number of light bulbs appeared to be off or burned out in the Santa Clara Convention Center. It was difficult to look at some quilts because they were hung in areas were the light was quite dim. Since I love the tactile element of quilting, this made touching the quilts displayed even more tempting, but white gloved gimlet eyed ladies roamed the aisles to prevent touching. In any case, I turned up the ISO on my trusty camera and took lots of pictures, which now downloaded are affording me a better opportunity to look closely at the craftsmanship and artistry.

Susan Shie – Flowers of the Arab Spring

Many quilts amazed me, but Moonlight Dance, below, was especially notable.  It was displayed with 3D glasses for viewers to wear. It’s hard to see in 2D pictures, but with the glasses on, the octopus’s cave, the reef and the jellies all came alive.

The quilts used to amaze me more in workmanship and craftsmanship, but this time around many quilts felt more like art than craft.

FabMo Pumpkins

Scrap Pumpkins 393

Frequent readers of this blog may have noticed that I like scraps.  See SCRAP for a favorite haunt.   I like making use of what others might consider debris.  And I appreciate others using and repurposing things that might otherwise become landfill.

FabMo is a non profit that was started to rescue fabric discarded from designer showrooms in San Francisco and around the Bay area.  This all volunteer, non profit organization has diverted approximately 70 tons annually from landfill and makes the fabric (and a few tile and carpet samples) available for creative reuse.

Scrap Pumpkins 392They hold selection days once a month in Mountain View – a couple of weekdays and one on the weekend.  They’re starting to have selection events also in the Santa Cruz area.

I don’t go every month or my home would be filled to the rafters with scraps of cloth,  There are wonderful swatches to be had! Subscribe to their mailing list if you’re local and interested.

piecedgoods Scrap Pumpkins 394PIJ997CR-2TOctober is pumpkin time.  I sewed and stuffed some pumpkins using fun FabMo fabrics and this pattern from Indygo Junction.

I couldn’t resist tweaking the pattern so after one pumpkin, the pattern and process started evolving.

I settled on using an adapted version of the pattern with 6 sections (vs. the 5 in the pattern) and slightly revised stem.

And now all those orangey fall designer upholstery fabrics have a new purpose.
